There are actually three in the trilogy, however there is The Hobbit which is a prelude to the trilogy and the Silmarilion tells of the history of Middle Earth. There are also various other books like "The Unfinished Tales" and "The lost tales".

*What is it about?

The LOTR is about a fellowship of nine companions who must destroy a Ring that was designed by the Dark Lord to rule all others. After sometime they split up and Frodo and Sam must continue the journey alone.
